Mobile game developer Storm8 was looking to create a mobile game that put the entire Roman empire into the palm of a user’s hands. Union took on this enormous task which included branding and identity design, user experience and all in-game menu system design, user experience and all in-game assets.

Beginning as a start-up group of game developers in California, Storm8 had chosen Empire Story to be the company's first major game. To complete this ambitious project, they just needed more than a little help from a qualified digital agency to design and deliver all necessary visuals. Being gamers ourselves, we knew that great games are always founded on great stories. Motivated by this love of narrative, we sought to tell a unique story through architectural progression, an animation technique which would require significantly more creative assets than originally considered.

BACKGROUND

We first established the look of the game by designing the user interface and essential brand assets, such as the Empire Story wordmark. This foundational design would drive the look of the vast collection of dynamic game assets. Our illustrators and animators were head-down and focused for six weeks on this epic project creating both 2D and 3D content. In the end, our Studio team created art for nearly 250 in-game assets.

The end result was a far-reaching depository of player assets, enough to motivate gamers to keep expanding their empires, held back only by their imaginations. Overall, this content helped Storm8 reach an astounding revenue volume and keep the game ranked as a top download for years after.
