Meet the Winner of Our 2021 Kelly Somey Digital Marketing Scholarship

College graduation ceremonies are here and so are the results of our sixth-annual scholarship process. This $1,000 digital marketing <a href="https://union.co/articles/2021-kelly-somey-scholarship-application">scholarship</a>, awarded to a rising college student, honors Kelly Somey, a former high school art teacher who inspired Union’s founder, Banks Wilson, to seek a career path after graduation driven by creativity. 
This year, we received scholarship applications from high school seniors across the country who are inspired to build careers on creativity. As is tradition, our team whittled the list down to five finalists and Somey read their essays to select the winner. 
Congratulations to Emma LoNardo, who is graduating from Ann Sobrato High School in California and will be majoring in graphic design at California Polytechnic State University.
Her take on creativity: "Graphic design is an art form, but I believe it is simultaneously the backbone of our current society. Every commercial, every sign, every box of cereal was designed with a purpose. In this field, you get to be original. It’s a world where creating something different is celebrated and being ambitious is admired."

LoNardo’s passion for graphic design was largely influenced by Kelly Lauren, who shares graphic design output on YouTube.
She added: “I would love to thank my parents for being my biggest supporters throughout every creative endeavor of mine. The theatre, design and photography teachers at my school have also been a massive inspiration that encouraged me to continue pursuing my passion in college.”
