AI Copywriting Tools: A Threat to Copywriters Everywhere?

Some think that AI will never be autonomous enough to steal our jobs. Well, tell that to the lone grocery store cashier as customers line up for the self-checkout machines. 
Copywriters may believe their jobs are safe for now. But will that hold true? The more time we spend inputting prompts into these AI tools, the more intelligent they become, right? 
Copy.ai seemed threatening, at first Copy.ai is just one of the many AI tools on the market today. 
One short year ago, it promised to generate organic social media posts and paid ads with high engagement and conversion rates. 
Since then, it appears to have changed tack, as its website’s homepage boasts new features and outcomes. Probably because it wasn’t delivering on its old promises.
Copy.ai had its share of downfalls last year:
<ul><li>It did not know the appropriate number of characters, emojis, or hashtags for high engagement on social media platforms.</li><li>It suggested low-performing hashtags.</li><li>It grabbed information from Wikipedia, outdated articles and 404 webpages.</li></ul>
These downfalls made the tool difficult to rely on. It was more of a copywriter’s muse than a copywriter itself. 
That being said, upon receiving a well-written prompt, Copy.ai could produce some impressive stuff. Its social copy was usually technically sound, with no spelling, grammar or syntax errors. Its use of idioms and puns were creative and funny. Its “Brand voice” feature was helpful. 
These successes could please certain copywriters, while making others shake in their boots…

<ul><li>ClickUp: This app was designed to manage any type of work, and it’s free to use. </li><li>Jasper: Jasper is an AI platform that allows marketing teams to build apps and workflows. </li><li>Copysmith: This is a collection of AI-powered products that help marketers produce great content. </li><li>Writesonic: Writesonic combines multiple AI applications to facilitate content creation and SEO. </li><li>Anyword: This AI promises to generate content that will increase sales and business performance.</li><li>Nichess: Nichess has over 150 tools to write anything 10 times faster than usual. </li><li>Peppertype: Ideating, producing, delivering and evaluating content are made easy with this AI-powered platform.</li><li>Dashword: This tool offers content briefs, optimization and monitoring.</li><li>Rytr: Content writers can ask Rytr to generate original content using their tone of voice, so it sounds more natural. </li><li>ClosersCopy: This product was designed to boost sales by generating SEO-optimized marketing copy. </li></ul>
Luckily, tools like these still rely on prompts from human copywriters to produce anything of substance. 
How to write a great prompt As many people have discovered, writing an effective AI prompt is a skill in and of itself. A few best practices include the following:

<ul><li>Be specific.</li><li>Choose one goal or task at a time.</li><li>Provide instructions for what to do instead of what not to do.</li><li>Provide context.</li><li>Use synonyms.</li><li>Use descriptive verbs.</li><li>Add helpful adverbs or adjectives.</li><li>Avoid jargon and acronyms.</li><li>Ask for output at a specific reading level.</li><li>Ask the AI model to role-play a persona.</li><li>Provide examples. </li><li>Be clear about the preferred level of detail.</li><li>Include the desired length and format.</li><li>Build on previous prompts.</li></ul>
But will mastering the art of prompt writing help copywriters? Or will it lead to their demise? 
Human vs. artificial intelligence There’s a theory that AI can actually get worse over time. Since AI doesn't have neuroplasticity to help it interpret, adapt and filter, the more data it gets after a certain threshold, the more conflicting inputs it gets and the sloppier its work becomes. So, while new tools may start off being effective, their value may erode as time goes on.
Copywriters can only hope that there’s some truth to this theory. Because in today’s economy, our jobs are one of the only things keeping us above water. Just in case, we might consider brainstorming our fallback careers sooner rather than later.
