CJ came to Union with a passion for global marketing and branding. He started in the marketing industry in Atlanta during the 1996 Olympic games, and that experience set the tone for his career. Today, he spends his time at work helping our clients realize their true potential in the digital ecosystem — most often by counseling them on ways to elevate their message and customer experiences, as well as streamline and improve their actual businesses.
Chris facilitates innovation between Union’s technology team and its other departments. As Technology Director, he leads a talented team of developers and directs the agency in its use of the latest technologies. Chris spends his days architecting systems, developing database structures, building frameworks for new platforms and establishing best-practices for the techniques the agency uses in developing digital marketing platforms for our clients.
Matt Taylor brings forward thinking and a unique design perspective to the Union creative team. Mostly self-taught, he has built up a formidable design expertise and keen eye with professional experience in interactive design and art direction. Before joining Union, Matt worked as a Senior Designer for Airtype, a small operation in Winston-Salem, leading creative for brands such as Valspar, Wake Forest University and RJ Reynolds. Outside of the office, he enjoys hanging out with his wife and son and fishing anywhere along the NC coast.
As Union’s Senior Developer, Matt works to create powerfully functional digital marketing experiences using his expertise in front-end and server-side programming. Prior to joining Union, Matt graduated from Central Piedmont Community College with a degree in web technologies and put his skills to work with the interactive department at Speed TV. Prior to moving to Charlotte, Matt lived in Pennsylvania, Chicago, Tennessee and New Jersey - and you can still find him wearing his hometown Steelers gear most days in the office.
Christy joined the Union team after a decade of experience in marketing and project management for national and international brands. Her ability to quickly build rapport, clarify priorities, generate innovative solutions and motivate key stakeholders has achieved measurable results for her clients in a variety of industries and both B2B, B2C environments. In her free time, Christy loves traveling and has been to 24 countries so far and plans to keep increasing that number every chance she gets. She also recently got married to a “ridiculously charming IT dude.”
Originally from Detroit, Teresa has lived in Charlotte since 2007. As an account manager, Teresa enjoys working with clients and Union team members to ensure that projects are completed on time and on budget. In her free time, she enjoys following her hometown teams, the Lions and the Tigers, and trying different restaurants around Charlotte.
Matt is a very analytical and numbers-oriented person which lends itself well to his position as a Digital Campaign Strategist. He uses his Google AdWords and Analytics certifications to set up and manage digital marketing campaigns that generate traffic for business’ websites and deliver measurable ROI. He brought four years of experience with him to Union - a year of which was spent in Spain working with English academies where he managed to find enough free time to run with the bulls in Pamplona and master the art of the siesta. Matt is also our resident brewmaster and spends some of his free time brewing up new types of beer for the team to enjoy after a hard days work.
As Union’s resident funny guy, Lucas brings a unique energy to the team that ensures everyone always has a smile on their face. He acts as the client point-of-contact and agency liaison, expertly moving projects from creative visions to engaging interactive platforms, all delivered on time and on budget. During the weekends, you can typically find Lucas outdoors with his wife and two dogs, who he claims are not that spoiled.
Jeremy is a self-taught, seasoned developer who has built websites and web applications professionally for 14 years, and is always looking to the future when creating for the present. He believes that software is irrelevant unless it is functional for the end user. He is a lover of cooking, seeing live music, gardening, biking around town, reading and watching college football and professional soccer. One of his more adventurous moments was when he once hiked to the summit of Japan’s Mt. Fuji in the middle of the night.
Pierced and inked, self-proclaimed chef, exhibitionist, and charisma wielder, Lauren focuses on making amazing, unique concepts come to life through impactful digital experiences and well thought-out user interactions. She creates unexpected solutions with a distinctive visual appearance, and as a perfectionist, she never settles for less. Throughout her career she has had the amazing opportunity to work with some admirable brands — Nickelodeon, Rackspace, The Washington Post, Red's Apple Ale and Discovery Place are high on the list. She has got an itch to learn more, an urge to improve her talents and a drive to create ‘kickass’, memorable work.
Katie began building websites when she was ten. A lady never reveals her age—let’s just say she has a LOT of experience. A self-taught developer, Katie is well versed in both front-end technologies and and back-end programing languages. She considers API integration part of a balanced breakfast. Katie attended the UNC-Charlotte, where she studied Chemistry for a lot longer than she probably should have. When she is not knee-deep in code, the former national champion speed skater enjoys playing roller derby for the Charlotte Roller Girls.
Derrick treats every project, whether it’s an icon set or a website layout, as an opportunity to learn and grow as a designer. Derrick graduated from UNC-Charlotte with a BFA in graphic design and after starting as an intern, got his first design job here at Union. Derrick was born and raised right here in North Carolina. Outside of the studio, he spends his time playing and watching basketball, collecting posters and screen printing and playing and learning how to make video games.
Wes is passionate about bringing creative works of art to life, and his role as a Front-End Developer at Union allows him to do just that. He took an interest in the web when he was just a tike, though others would suggest that was only a few months ago. Wes has held a series of unique web developer roles, all of which helped him grow comfortably into his current role with Union. When he is not whipping up CSS3, HTML5 and jQuery, Wes enjoys spending time with his friends checking out a Knights or a Hounds game, and spending time with his family.
Coming from a background in videography, Brandon has a unique perspective on how he writes code. Looking at problems from an artistic point of view rather than that of an engineer, he is often able to find solutions where traditional developers might see limitations. The combination of Brandon’s love of creating things and his wife’s love of Pinterest keeps him busy in his free time crafting pieces for their home. He once successfully replaced the head gasket on his car by watching youtube videos, but vows to take it to a professional next time.
A Charlotte native, Claire moved back to the Queen City in 2013 to pursue a career in Account Management. After interning at the agency for nine months, she was offered a full time position. She's driven to serve the agency’s clients and helping them to solve their marketing challenges with innovative and creative solutions. In her spare time, she enjoys being active outdoors and often trying out new recipes that she has found on Pinterest. During the fall you will most likely find Shannon cheering on her favorite team - the Crimson Tide.
Originally from Charlotte’s Dilworth neighborhood, mere steps from the Union office, John Thompson is an artist who loves working with his hands. With a background creating masterpieces in pottery and leatherwork, he now spends his time creating masterpieces out of code as Union’s Development Intern. Before joining Union, John spent a sizable amount of time wandering the beaches of Wilmington dabbling in the art of skee-ball, only to return to Charlotte. He enjoys taking great looking sites and “making them clickable,” assembling the smaller parts to create fully functional results.
Pixel fills the valuable role of the four-legged Director of Distraction at Union. With the stereotypical energy of a Jack Russell, Pixel can usually be found wandering the office looking for leftovers in the trash and making puppy faces in hopes of getting a treat. As one of the newer members of the team, Pixel has been a welcomed addition to the office and provides the occasional much-needed distraction and fun on the busy workdays.

Back in February, I wrote a love letter post about An Event Apart. Karen McGrane's presentation "The Mobile Content Mandate" made it quite clear that the mobile revolution is already here. In particular, the iPhone disrupted the marketplace and made it less expensive to access web content. Instead of needing a home computer and an internet provider, all that's needed is a phone with a data plan. With an increasing number of web-aware devices comes the need to test on a wide variety of them. Not only are there more devices out there, but the differences between their screen dimensions are vast.
The 2013 ADDYs have come and gone but our excitement still remains. Union (formerly Studiobanks) took home two Silver ADDYs this year; one for our work on Discovery Place Kid's mobile site and a second for our very own Holiday Microsite.
